They are the typical takeaway establishments EXTRA LARGE size holding 568ml or one pint but much more environmentally friendly. Everyone wants to move away from single-use plastic but alternatives are hard to find. Reusable glasses are not always appropriate and there is a growing awareness that ‘biodegradable plastic' does not biodegrade in the natural environment.

The good news is that CE-pint-to-rim paper cups are now available for the first time – using 90% less plastic than a regular plastic cup – CE marked – and now really easy to recycle. So what is new about them? Paper cups have to be lined with something to stop them leaking and disintegrating. It is this mixed-material composition that has traditionally made them so hard to recycle.

But a quick search today on 'paper cup recycling' will show that the options for recycling paper cups are now plentiful. It is the recycling eco system that is new. What else has changed? These are CE marked pint-to-rim.

This means that they are Trading Standards-approved and can be used as the measure for serving beer and cider from free-flow pumps. In the past, it was too difficult to make an inexpensive paper cup with the degree of precision required to pass the tests, but new manufacturing techniques now make it a reality. At a conservative estimate, that's over 100,000 tonnes of plastic waste, much of which ends up in landfill or our environment.
