Position: partial to deep shade Soil: moist, humus-rich, acid soil Rate of growth: average Hardiness: fully hardy With its graceful, dark green fronds, this evergreen fern offers year-round interest in shady, damp areas. The rosette-like shape is formed by narrow, pinnate sterile fronds that spread semi-horizontally, creating a neat, tufted appearance. Taller, erect fertile fronds emerge during the growing season, turning green before withering and curling into attractive brown skeletons once they have released their spores.

Found naturally in temperate forests and moors, including parts of the UK, this fern thrives in lime-free, moist soil. Ideal for woodland gardens, it complements other shade-loving plants. Blechnum spicant grows to around 50cm tall and is a hardy, low-maintenance choice for adding texture and visual interest to shaded spots.

Garden care: Plant in a shady, damp spot with well-draining, acidic or neutral soil. Ensure the planting hole is enriched with plenty of well-rotted leaf mould, composted pine needles, or garden compost to improve moisture retention and soil structure. While this fern is low-maintenance once established, regular watering is important, especially in dry spells, to keep the soil consistently moist.

Remove any dead or damaged fronds in spring to promote healthy new growth and maintain its tidy appearance. Mulch around the base to retain moisture, but avoid piling it up against the crown to prevent rot.
