Please select the magnification that matches your objective lens. A lower objective magnification allows for a higher magnification of the eyepiece. For example, in combination with a 4x or 10x objective, eyepieces with 20x or 25x magnification can be used without compromising image quality.
With a 100x objective, a 10x or 12.5x eyepiece is usually the maximum. As a rule of thumb for the maximum sensible magnification, you can use: numerical aperture of the objective x 1000 = max. sensible magnification.
For example, with a 10x objective with a numerical aperture of NA 0.25, a maximum magnification of 250x can be achieved; for this, a 25x eyepiece is required. The numerical aperture is printed on many objectives behind the magnification specification. Magnifications beyond the maximum sensible magnification do not reveal any additional details (so-called empty magnification) and are not recommended.
Many microscopes with an integrated Barlow lens (such as Biolux) allow the use of 30 mm eyepieces when the Barlow lens is pulled out.
