Graphite was first discovered in the 1500s in Borrowdale in the Lake District, a stones throw from Derwents first pencil factory, and the company produced the first graphite pencil in the UK.

Graphite, as generously used in the sketching pencils, is still a staple of the Derwent range today. A versatile drawing tool, Derwent Sketching Pencils are the ideal choice for freestyle sketches and bold line drawings, allowing complete and spontaneous freedom of expression. The soft, extra wide graphite core sweeps smoothly across the page for expressive lines and a fast, even lay down of tone.

The sketching pencils are available in three degrees of softness which can be blended together to create subtle variations in tone and mood. The 2B and 4B pencils have a softer core ideal for creating soft smudge-able lines whilst the HB pencil is a middle of the range between Hard and Black. Once a rough sketch is down on paper the pencils can be sharpened to a fine point to add the all important detail.

The pencils are presented in a metal tin with an embossed Derwent logo, removable lid and individual pencil slots, meaning they can easily be stored and protected. Finished in black livery with a distinct grey stripe for easy identification, the pencils degree is imprinted into its paintwork. The rounded barrel is ideal for broad, sweeping strokes and the pencils are easy to sharpen and break resistant, making them ideal for long periods of use.

Included in the tin are 2 x HB, 2B and 4B pencils plus a pencil sharpener. The Derwent sketching paper pads, available in portrait and landscape, A3, A4 and A5, are an ideal extra for creating, experimenting and storing work.
