Purpose-designed it features a sealed entrance hole allowing woodpeckers to peck at the hole and uncover the entrance. Additionally, the nestbox is constructed with a thick bowl-shaped bottom to accommodate their large eggs. The door is secured by a hook and positioned on the side allowing for easy cleaning and maintenance after the breeding season.

It is generally recommended that the nestbox is mounted 3-5 m off the ground with a clear flight path and minimal disturbance.
