The large forested areas in the Pohja region, with its unlimited possibilities for hydroelectric power and extremely convenient waterways, made it an ideal center for the Finnish metal industry. The ironworks at Antskog have existed since about 1630, and Billnäs followed in 1641. Fiskars was founded in 1649 and is now one of the oldest companies in the western world.
