Inspired by the late 18th century instrument maker Peter Dollond, founder of the eponymous optical empire, the quarter size Dollond Sundial is based on an original design which can still be seen in the London Science Museum today.Using the example of early navigators and sailors portable sundials as a time telling device, the gnomon, which casts the shadow, can be set for latitude on a sliding scale.

The magnetic compass in the base enables the whole instrument to be oriented for direction whilst the height adjustable legs ensure that the instrument is used upright and level.
