The KH stands for short tail, as the original version of the 917 was modified to deliver better performance on the racetrack. For example, by shortening the rear end, it was possible to increase the width of the 917 so that wider tyres could be fitted, resulting in better handling. This Porsche also achieved an overall victory in the 1000 KM race.

In the 24 Hours of Le Mans, drivers Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood drove to victory. The two drivers clocked up a total of 343 laps.
