How it works Pop one or two cloves of garlic inside the flat-bottomed, stainless steel hopper – it doesn’t matter whether they’re peeled or not – line up the red dots and slot the top half into the helical grooves, then push the handles towards each other.

The helix action does the crushing without any strain and any skin is held inside for you to discard. Other features Made from durable, odour-resistant stainless steel and nylon. Comes apart for easy cleaning.

Joseph Joseph Helix – the science bit The design team at Joseph Joseph worked out that using a 180 helical twist would mean cooks could utilise their upper body strength, using the naturally strong muscle groups in arms and shoulders rather than relying on having a firm grip. The resulting Helix range of products makes mashing, ricing, juicing and crushing garlic much easier than in conventional lever-press versions.
