Bitcoin is a virtual means of payment launched in 2009 that is scooped and managed by all participating clients of the decentralised Bitcoin network.

Like many other proof-of-work cryptographic currencies, Bitcoins are generated by computer-soluted cryptographic computational tasks using high amounts of energy, known as mining. In the meantime, GPU-based mining for Bitcoins is no longer worthwhile due to the immensely increased requirements. This is why new crypto currencies, so-called Altcoins, such as Ethereum, are constantly being created, which can continue to be mined profitably with GPUs.

In principle, normal computer processors (CPUs) are able to dig for new old coins, but they can only calculate a few (kilo) hashes per second and are therefore not suitable for mines in relation to the time and energy they take. In terms of efficiency, they are clearly beaten by graphics processors (GPUs), with graphics chips from AMD's Radeon series in particular proving to be particularly powerful. Mining rigs are PC systems consisting of commercially available hardware components whose sole task is to calculate crypto currencies using several graphics cards in continuous operation.
