At the moment they recommend to buy only small units of the new balls, because the durability, the quality and the selection procedures are not yet optimized. The conventional celluloid balls currently clearly have the better durability. The manufacturers are currently working hard to continuously improve the quality of the CellFree balls.

They would like to point out that the shorter shelf life is at least a temporary feature of the new CellFree / plastic ball generation and can neither be claimed by them nor by the producer as a quality defect. Currently only white CellFree balls are produced. Whether and when orange balls will also be available is still unknown.

Background to the introduction of the CellFree/ Plastikball: Celluloid is a dangerous good and as a production material on its way back worldwide. Access to celluloid resources is therefore no longer assured for the next few years. In order to ensure the continuation of the sport of table tennis, the ITTF called some years ago for the search for a material which is not dangerous and which is available worldwide in sufficient quantities and on a permanent basis.

The ball manufacturers have found the solution of the plastic ball with the ITTF.
