It was introduced by Joseph Myatt of of Manor Farm in Deptford to honour England's queen. It is also known as 'Myatts Victoria' and 'Queen Victoria'. This was followed a couple of years later by 'Prince Albert' and 'British Queen'.

The stalks average 20 to 40 centimetres long, and range in colour from light pink to ruby red, or even shades of yellow or green. Has large, fat stems, bright skin, and a wonderfully tart, apple-gooseberry flavour with just a touch of citrus and are not stringy at all. Only the stalks of the rhubarb plant are edible as the roots and leaves are TOXIC with no safe culinary use.

This is said to be due to a high concentration of oxalic acid, an organic poison and corrosive found in many plants, but in considerably large amounts in Rhubarb leaves.
