This means that this sign is particularly visible at night when illuminated by the light from a vehicle’s headlamps.

Conforming to the new European road sign standard BS EN 12899-1:2007 (that replaced the UK’s now obsolete British Standard BS873), the reflectivity of this sign is classified as class RA1 (the old class 2). This is an ‘engineering grade’ sign with lower reflectivity than a R2 sign. However, it is still suitable for all unlit roads (except Dual carriageways) and temporary sites.
