This allows the user to enjoy the uphill with the smooth efficiency of a modern pin binding, before reverting back to a hard charging alpine binding for the descent. The Shift was designed in response to feedback from Salomon team riders who were looking for an improvement over traditional frame style touring bindings. The weakness of conventional frame bindings is that they depend on a require structure to connect the heel and toe piece, which in turn has a tendency to interfere with the natural flex of the ski.
