In dogs with heart disease, EPA helps maintain lean body mass and appetite, as well as heart rate, blood pressure and normal platelet aggregation. In dogs with renal failure omega-3 fatty acids help slow the progression of renal failure. In congestive heart failure sodium disposal is reduced as part of the compensatory response mechanism, with consequent retention of sodium and water.

The reduced sodium level helps to break the vicious circle of water retention, which is essential in patients with kidney, liver and heart failure. A restricted phosphorus content is essential to reduce hyperphosphataemia and to slow the progression of renal failure.
