This gear lever is shorter than the standard B183 model and can therefore be mounted closer to the steering wheel. Like the B183, the B85 can also be installed horizontally or vertically on the port or starboard side and has an automatically engaging neutral safety lock to prevent unintentional clutch engagement or forward/reverse shifting. The manoeuvrability of the gear lever can be adjusted via an externally adjustable brake.

The X12 neutral safety switch can be retrofitted as an accessory to block the starter motor when a gear is engaged. The Ultraflex B183 can be used with the C2, C8, C14, MACHZero and MACH14 gearshift cables, as well as with the Ultraflex C5, MACH5 and C16 gearshift cables using the K35 adapter.
