This is because it has two beneficial effects, improving the function of the heart muscle (positive inotropic) and improving the blood flow to the heart (selective vasodilator). Pimobendan improves heart function and reduces symptoms of heart disease.

Some studies have shown that it may delay the development of symptoms if started early in cases of Myxomatous mitral valve disease or in Dilated cardiomyopathy in Doberman.
